Avis was born on September, 26 1921 in Canaan, Connecticut, a daughter of the late Walter Scott Long and Avis G. Davenport. After losing her mother at the age of six, Avis was adopted by her sister, Ella Wanderlick, and her husband, Joseph.
Mrs. Ovitt worked for many years at General Telephone as an Operator and later as a Toll Investigator, retiring at age 59. She was a member of the former First United Methodist Church of Johnstown for over 50 years. Avis enjoyed cooking, baking, travelling and tending to her flower garden. She continued to go cross-country skiing into her mid 70s. Avis will be remembered for her love and devotion to her family.
On September 30, 1939, Avis was united in marriage to David O. Ovitt who passed away on February 24, 1995.
Mrs. Ovitt is survived by three sons Gary (Lisa) Ovitt of Sloansville, Carl (Deborah) Ovitt of Rockwood and Brian Ovitt of Johnstown; two daughters, Gloria Hughes of Mayfield and Cyndi Sparks of Garoga; two adopted grandchildren, Christine Collar of California and Bruce F. Ovitt Jr., of Gloversville; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Avis was predeceased by two sons Bruce F. Ovitt Sr. and Vern Daniel Ovitt, one brother and five sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 15 at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown with Rev. Kenneth Sickler officiating.
Visitation for family and friends will be on Sunday, April 14 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
