James W. Johnson, 74, of Ironton Route 2, died today at a Bellefonte, Ky., hospital.

A native of Elliott County, Ky., he had resided in the Haverhill area since 1946. Johnson was a retired molder for Dayton Malleable Iron Co., and was a member and lifetime deacon at Franklin Furnace Independent Baptist Church.

His wife, Effie Lovejoy Johnson, died in 1978.

Surviving are a son, Donald of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Ramona Vernier of Farmington Hill, Mich., and Avanell Webb of Ironton Route 2; a brother, Arnold Johnson of New Castle, Pa.; two sisters, Ethel Johnson of Franklin Furnace, and Verna White of Hillsboro; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral service is 1 p.m Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Dennis Hankins and the Rev. Richard Porter officiating, and burial in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton and one hour before the service at the church Thursday.
