Lucius M. Bailey, 99, one of six living Confederate veterans in Alabama, died early yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Warren May, 302 N. St. Andrews St. He was ninety-nine years old. He had been ill for eleven weeks, but until his last illness has enjoyed good health.
Mr. Bailey was born in Newton County, Ga., July 8, 1847,the son of Peyton and Amanda Bailey. The family moved to Dale County, Ala., in 1853.
With the outbreak of the War Between the States, Mr. Bailey followed in the footsteps of his father who was a captain in the Confederate Army, and enlisted as a volunteer in 1861 when he was only 14 years old.
He was placed in the Eufaula Light Artillery but was forced to return home for a time when he suffered a relapse from measles while his battery was near Montgomery.
Returning to the unit, he served as a gunner for the remainder of the war. He took part in several famous battles including the Battle of Atlanta, the Battle of Chickamauga and the final battle at Mobile.
He fought in 27 battles in all and was wounded three times.
His wife died Sept. 30, 1939 and was buried at Hartford. Since her death Mr. Bailey divided his time between his daughters, Mrs. May of Dothan and Mrs. A. C. Fields of Hartford. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. today at the Ward-Wilson chapel, with the Rev. A. D. Zbinden officiating. Interment will be in the Hartford cemetery beside his wife. Pallbearers: Lester Bailey, Homer Bailey, Pierce Bailey, Cecil Dorcey, Wilburn May and Doyle Pilcher.
Besides his two daughters, Mr. Bailey is survived by three sons, George C. Bailey of Sampson, Julian L. Bailey of Vernon, Fla., and Luther P. Bailey of Abbeville.
In addition there are 25 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren, and 14 great great grandchildren.
