Found in The State 14 February 1963: Jo Berry Sloan Lyles, prominent Columbia attorney, died Wednesday morning after several months of failing health. Mr. Lyles was born in Columbia Aug. 18, 1885, son of the late William Haynsworth and Miriam Sloan Lyles. He attended private and public schools in Columbia and was graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1905. He received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1908, graduating cum laude. While there he was elected a member of Harvard Law Review. Upon returning to Columbia he began the practice of law with his father under the firm name of Lyles and Lyles and continued his practice until retirement in 1962. During World War I he served in the Naval Air Force. In the course of his law practice, Mr. Lyles acquired the reputation of being one of the most outstanding and distinguished legal minds in South Carolina. He applied his talents as an advocate and his vast knowledge of the law to many of the "landmark cases" in this state, many of which were of national significance. Among attorneys, his arguments before the United States Supreme Court were regarded as legendary and he was held in highest regard by that court. He was called upon to sit as a special circuit judge on several occasions and he also served as an acting associate judge for the South Carolina Supreme Court. A man of varied talents, early in his career he served as president of the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad Co. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association and Richland County Bar Association. In 1917 he married Miss Evelyn Robertson of Columbia, who survives him. Also surviving are his son, Dr. William S. Lyles of Winnsboro and four grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Elmwood cemetery, by the Rev. James Stirling, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church.
