Mrs. Fikse was born in Ireton, Iowa, on January 2, 1931, to Gysbert and Alberdina (Roelofs) Vande Werfhorst. At the age of two, she moved with her family to Oak Harbor. She attended Oak Harbor schools, graduating from Oak Harbor High School in 1947. Janet was married to Gerald Fikse on June 30, 1950. On October 15, 1958, the couple opened Gerald's Jewelry, which has become an Oak Harbor institution over the years. Janet loved the business that she and Gerald built together, and spent much time there until very recently. Janet and Gerald received the Retail Jeweler of the Year Award in 1971.
Janet filled her role as grandmother beautifully, and loved to dote on her three grandsons. She enjoyed travelling, and was able to make a business trip to Antwerp, Belgium for the store on one occasion. She will be remembered for her elegance and grace. Janet was a member of First Reformed Church until 1997, and then Whidbey Presbyterian Church.
Janet is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gerald; two children, Jerilyn Fikse of Bonney Lake and David Fikse (Jane) of Oak Harbor; three grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew and Benjamin Fikse; one sister, Johanna Ernst (Chris) of Oak Harbor; also numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her brother, Frank Vande Werfhorst and four sisters: Minnie Riepma, Marie VanDyk, Henrietta Baan and Geraldine Atwood.
