Jacob Golladay, the oldest son of Joseph was born in the year 1791 or 1792, possibly in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Yet, the 1850 & 1860 U.S. Census records for Shenandoah County, Virginia indicate that Jacob was born in Virginia. Additional research may clear up the confusion on where Jacob was born. He was a blacksmith by trade.
The first record of Jacob Golladay in the Shenandoah County, Virginia concerns a transfer of ownership from father Joseph to Jacob, dated 7 October 1807, of a tract of land in Powell's Fort Valley. It is doubtful he ever lived here. In 1812, he enlisted in the Virginia Militia in the Rifle Company of Captain Samuel Hawkins in Woodstock, Virginia. He enlisted again on 2 June 1814 for action in the War of 1812, and was sent to Norfolk, Virginia. This tour ended 17 June 1814 with his discharge.
In March 1813, Jacob married Margaret Funk, a bond of record in Shenandoah County Courthouse. They settled and raised their family around Mt. Jackson, Virginia. Their 8 Golladay children included: Phoebe, Cyrus (1815-), Matilda (Golladay 1818-1891) Golladay-Hawkins, Rebecca (Golladay 1831-) Hawkins, Amanda, Perry (1836-1911), Peyton (1839-1921) and Lucretia (Golladay 1842-) Sibert. Exact dates of death are not known, but Margaret must have died during the decade of the 1860's as determined from the census records, and Jacob died in the 1870's, leaving no Will of record. The lifespan for Jacob was projected to be approximately 90 years, and for Margaret, approximately 67 years.
