David was captured at the Battle of Chicamauga, 9/19/1863, where he received a gunshot wound under the left eye that left him blind in that eye. He spent 17 months in Confederate prisons, including Andersonville, and was released in February, 1865. He was granted a 2/3 disability pension in 1868.

He returned to farm in the Bismarck, IL are for the remainder of his life. September 14, 1865 he married Nancy Ann Delay. He was a member of the Bismarck Church of Christ.
