BIOGRAPHY:

HENRY CLAY FENSTERMAKER
1839-1891

Henry Clay Fenstermaker served in the Union Army with General Grant at Shiloh.

After the war he left Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and spent the remainder of his life on Fish Creek Springs, Eureka, Nevada where he founded the Fish Creek Ranch.

Rich lead and silver ore were discovered in September 1864 by a miner who cried "Erueka" thus naming the boom town.

Henry Clay Fenstermaker Sr. prospered, at one time owning a third interest in one of the larger mines, until the boom ended in 1891.

Years after his death July Victor and Carrie returned (from California) to Eureka with a monument for Henry Sr, which they erected at Fish Creek Ranch. The monument marks the grave and reads:

Henry Clay Fenstermaker
1839-1891
With Grant at Shiloh
Founder of Fish Creek Ranch

The monument also marks the location of the original Fish Creek Ranch buildings, which no longer exist. Fish Creek Ranch headquarters, now a considerable distance from the original site, changed hands for the sum of $1,500,000.00 seventy-five years ago from the date of this biography, but Annie Long Fenstermaker received very little for it in 1891.
