UTAH SENATOR, ATTORNEY, 43, DIES OF ILLNESS

John Arthur Bailey, 43, Utah state senator and Salt Lake attorney, died Thursday at 8:40 a.m. in a Salt Lake hospital of a heart ailment.
Mr. Bailey, who resided in Cottonwood Heights subdivision, 3000 East 70th South, Union, was elected on the Democratic ticket to the senate last November. He was unable to attend many sessions because of illness.
He also served from 1942 until 1944 in the senate, promoting employe and employer relationship and educational legislation.
Mr. Bailey was chairman of the Salt Lake Democratic county committee until he resigned last fall.
He was born Nov. 14, 1905, in Albion, Ida., a son of Joseph Ransom and Mary B. (sic) Bailey, and attended Rupert, Ida. schools. Mr. Bailey was graduated from the University of Utah in 1936, where he was president of law school students and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
On Jan. 1, 1937, he was admitted to the Utah State Bar and practiced law in Salt Lake City.
Mr. Bailey worked as a movie projectionist while attending the university. He maintained an interest in movie industries and was a member of local 250, IATSE, theater workers' union.
Mr. Bailey was a member of the Utah State Bar, the Salt Lake Lions Club, International Footprint Assn., University club and Salt Lake lodge No. 85, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Ruth Johnson Bailey; two sons, Lynn Reed and John Arthur Bailey, Jr.; two daughters, Mary Dawn and Penny Ruth Bailey, Cottonwood Heights; five sisters, Mrs. Verna B. Bell, Cedar City; Mrs. Stella B. Schofield, Rupert; Mrs. Etta Pratt, Bellingham, Wash.; Mrs. Mae Bird, Heyburn, Ida., and Mrs. Pearl Hyer, Long Beach, Cal.; two brothers, Joseph S. Bailey, Heyburn, and William Bailey, Los Angeles.
