James Lafayette "Joe" Sansom,   born in Walton Co., Ga. the son of Micajah Cades Sansom (1799 – 1859) & Permeila Barfield (Levina) Vann (1802 – 1895). He married 20 Apr 1854 in Whitfield Co., Ga. to Josephine Lavonia Johnson (1838-1923). They were very young when they married and moved by covered wagon from Georgia to Alabama to Farmersville in Collins County where they settled. He farmed and hauled freight to Jefferson, Texas. Later they moved Shady Grove in Upshur Co. where they lived the remainder of their lives. Their children included Marcus Randolph Sansom (1901-1999), Dennis Marcus Sansom (1856 – 1929), Nancy Jane Sansom (1860 – 1949), Mary Etta Sansom born about 1861, Lavonia Josephine Sansom (1862 – 1947), Julie Sansom (1870 – 1880), Caree Lavonia Sansom (1871 – 1920), William Rufus Sansom (1873 – 1905), James Thomas Sansom (1876 – 1947), and Marcus Randolph Sansom born about 1878. During the Civil War he served from 1861 - 1865 Co. E, 16th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Fitzhugh's), CSA, and received a Confederate Veteran's Pension #4138. Brother of Confederate Heroine Emma Sansom Johnson.
