Father of J.R.R. Tolkien. He was born in 1857 in Handsworth, near Birmingham, one of eight children of a piano manufacturer of partly German descent, and had worked at Lloyd's Bank in that city before emigrating to South Africa in order to take up a post with the Bank of Africa. He was joined there, a year or so later, by his fiancee, Mabel Suffield. On the 16th. April 1891, the couple were married in Cape Town Cathedral, and spent their honeymoon in Sea Point, before travelling to Bloemfontein, where Arthur had been appointed manager of the bank's branch. They went on to have two sons, Ronald and Hilary, but Arthur died of a haemorrhage while his wife and children were on a visit to England.
