Graveside funeral service for Jane Wilder Poynter, 78, of Oklahoma City, was held at 1 PM Saturday, July 20, at the Cherokee Municipal Cemetery.
Mrs. Poynter died on February 17, 1991, in Oklahoma City after an extended illness.
Born on February 26, 1913, in Cherokee, Mrs. Poynter was a graduate of Cherokee High School and the University of Oklahoma, later teaching in many northwest Oklahoma and Texas Panhandle schools. She married Herbert E. Poynter and had been a resident of Oklahoma City for the past 25 years.
Mrs. Poynter comes from a pioneer family. Her father was the first county attorney of Alfalfa County at the time of statehood and later became county judge. Her mother was also an attorney; admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association in 1917.
Her brother, Webster Wilder of San Antonio, Texas, survives her. He served two terms as a state representative for Alfalfa County and was also elected county attorney.
Mrs. Poynter was an avid supporter of all University of Oklahoma athletic teams, traveling numerous times to their post – season football games. She was also an ardent supporter of the Republican political party.
