Saratoga Springs, N.Y. -- Bishop Robert DeWitt passed away in Saratoga Springs on November 21, 2003.

Bishop DeWitt was a leader in the Episcopal Church for over 60 years. He served in both the Dioceses of Mich. and Pa.

He played an active role in issues of social justice throughout his life. Of particular importance to him were issues surrounding racial equality, women's rights and the anti-war movement.

Bishop DeWitt was one of several bishops involved in the ordination of women in 1974.

Bishop DeWitt resigned as bishop of Pa. in 1973 and became the editor of The Witness magazine and president of the Episcopal Publishing Company.

Bishop and Mrs. DeWitt retired to Maine in 1981. Bishop DeWitt continued to focus on issues of both local and social importance.

Bishop DeWitt was born in Jamaica Plain, Mass. in 1916.

He graduated from Amherst College in 1937 and from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass. in 1940.

Bishop DeWitt is survived by his wife Barbara DeYoe DeWitt.

Also surviving are his five children, Rebecca DeWitt of Saratoga Springs, Laurence DeWitt of Delmar, N.Y., Kathrina DeWitt Yost of Philadelphia, Pa. and John and Robert L. DeWitt Jr. of Isle an Haut, Maine.

There are also 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bishop Robert L. DeWitt Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Episcopal Theological Seminary, 99 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.
