William G. L. Rice was born on the October 28, 1829 in South Carolina – the son of Shadrach Rice and Louisa Elizabeth Linerieux Rice.

When he was around eight (8) years old, he moved with his parents and younger siblings to Orysa, Lauderdale County, Tennessee, in 1837.

He was named after his maternal grandfather, William Griffin Linerieux, who lived with his wife, Martha Josephine, in Georgetown, South Carolina. Over his younger years, William went back to South Carolina from time to time to spend time with his grandparents.

According to census records, William was attending South Carolina College in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1850. He also studied medicine and became a physician.

He married Sarah Myers Wilson on the May 14, 1851 in Georgetown, South Carolina. They lived in South Carolina until moving to Lauderdale County, Tennessee, in 1858. William and Sarah and their first seven (7) children are found in the 1860 census in Lauderdale County, Tennessee, living on a farm next to the farm of William's parents.

When the War Between the States broke out, William went back to South Carolina to enlist in the Confederate Army. His records show that he was wounded, but he continued to serve in an inactive duty status in such positions as recruiter until the end of the war. After the war, he returned to Lauderdale County, Tennessee.

He died on February 25, 1869 and is buried in St. Paul Cemetery in Orysa, Lauderdale County, Tennessee.

William G. L. Rice owned what was the S.S. Gause place in Lauderdale County, originally part of the original land, the Gauses having moved away. This place was passed down to their son W.G.L. Rice.

Sarah M. Wilson (daughter of Thomas E. and Elizabeth Thompson Wilson) married William D. Rice on 24 May 1851.
