To: Dr T. M. Calvert
(Note--Thomas Miller Calvert, son of Hugh Ewing Calvert, Grandson of Thomas C. Calvert)
(Note-Ida is the niece of Thomas Miller Calvert, daughter of Rezin Calvert, granddaughter of Hugh Ewing Calvert and Great Grand daughter of Thomas and Anna Ewing Calvert)
Dear Uncle:
We came home from Greene County last night and have nearly all the information you desire.
We found the Grave of our great grandfather Thomas C. Calvert on the hill above Roberts Run on a farm owned by Richard Calvert's son Tommy. The Plot is fenced but the stone was there in three pieces. When we got the stone out of the ground we found the inscription perfect.

2003 Sylvia Whittaker and David Bell can not locate this lost stone. When we met with Florence Zimmerman Calvert (wife of Tommy Calvert (Thomas Conklin Calvet)said she knew where there were flowers coming up each year, and other cemetery in a meadow with a few stones was mowed over years ago.

Military: Records from Dale Harlan
Note: A Military Sword was among the items of his estate sale.

The Military copies Dale Harland has are faded a lot, but they are:
1. PA Militia records from Capt. T.J. Seeley's Company showing:
a. Thomas Calvert appointed to the company of Seeley's Calvary on September 25, 1812 for six months. On all records he is listed as "3rd Sgt" or just "Sgt."
Thomas Calvert Muster Roll - Sargeant War of 1812 T. I. Seeley's Company of Cavalry, 1 Reg't PA Militia. Pay Per month 20.00. Allowance, cash drawn at Pittsburgh: 16.00. Oct 2 to Dec 12 1812.

b. The Company Pay Roll is not entirely consistent.
c. The first is for Oct. 2 to Dec. 2, 1812. So two months at $8 per month = $16.
d. Next is one for Oct. 26 to Dec. 2, 1812. This indicates the date of his appointment was from Oct. 2, 1812 to April 2, 1813. But it says discharged (presumably Dec. 2nd) "being 210 miles from the place of residence." Under remark, we find "cash received or drawn at Pittsburg $16.00."
e. The fourth pay stub is stated as being at "expiration of service" on December 12, 1812 and is said to be for two months. He was paid "$46 dollars, 66 2/3 cents." It is said that includes "The allowance of 40 cents for the use and risk of horses."

Sir,
I am compelled to write you again in relation to the Claims of Thos. Calvert no. 8259 & 199.025-
The first application was made in March 1855 through Cynerrubleve(sic) who subsequently removed to Iowa, The second by me, and you suggested a Consolidation of the claims or applications,
The old man is most impatient for his warrant-is very poor and now in his 87th year-
He was a sargeant in Capt. Seely's Co.- Penn. Militia -
and if the delay in issuing his warrant is for want of evidence of service, of which however I have received no information, his service can be proven very readily by some trouble in 'H?os?e'(sic) who were in the service with him.

Hon. Geo. C Whiting Very respectfully

2. I have no documentation indicating Thomas Calvert ever received his land warrant. The first letter of 7/28/1855 says he was 85 (so he would be born in 1769 or 1770). That was declared in the affidavit from Justice of Peace William Sine.

1843 Tax list of Perry Township: Calvert, Thomas (grist mill)

About the year 1815, Thomas settled on Rudolph Run at the mouth of Hoy Run, one mile above the present village of Brock.
(Side Note: The Coal Company later owned the land and built an air shaft where the house stood)

In 1823 he built the first saw mill in the area and a short time later he added a grist mill both water powered from Hoy and Rudolph runs. The machinery for these mills was drawn across the mountain from Baltimore by oxen. Thomas and his wife Anna Ewing had 8 children, Anna died and Thomas remarried Margaret. Thomas was still residing at the mouth of Hoy run in 1865 and probably remained there until his death in 1868 at almost 99 years of age.
(Notes of Alva J. Headlee, 1982)

2003 David Bell and Sylvia Whittaker can account for 6 children per census with Annie Ewing and 2 per census and death with second wife Margaret.
Five children of Thomas and Annie Ewing mention in will and one daughter from second wife Margaret.

Ewing Colbert, son and heir at Law of Thomas Calvert late of Perry Township, deceased appears and says by Art Purmon, his counsel, that the paper writings exhibited and purporting to be the last will and testament of the said Thomas Colbert bearing date the 4th day of August 1866 is not the last will and testament of the said decedent and he request that an issue may be sent to the Court of Common Pleas of Greene County, Pennsylvania to try the facts.
And the said Ewing Calvert says that the said Thomas Colbert deceased was not at the time of the execution of the said writing of sound mind and disposing memory and understanding, That the said writing was executed by the Thomas Colbert under undue influence of Susannah Clovis, Margaret Colbert and others, who are made legatees under the will. That the said writing was executed by said deceased by false and fraudulent representations of the said Susannah and Margaret and others interesting in their behalf as legatees in the said will.

Com. Pen.(sic) Your Servant

Document: In the Register Court of Greene County

Questions:
1860 Census: Where is Mary Ann as she was still alive in 1868 when father died, Simply referred to as Mary Ann no last name typed into the will.

In 1870 where are her children Eliza age 18, Matilda age 14, and Benjamin 11, Marion is found the home of John and Dorothy Fox.

Note: Clark Calvert (Grandson of this Meriah "Mary Ann" Calvert) son of Frances Marion Calvert came to WV with cousin Ida Calvert (granddaughter of Hugh E. Calvert) in 1921 and they were looking for family tombstone, which also helps prove that this is Meriah "Mary Ann" Calvert.

(Excerpts from Letter of Ida Calvert)
We next went to the old graveyard at Blacksville and easily found the grave of Anne Ewing Calvert
The others were satisfied with their find but there were so many old stones there that Clark and I insisted on looking at them.
