Native Dakotan's Funeral Saturday;
Born In Small Sod Shanty
(By Mrs Muriel Cramer)

Last Saturday afternoon at 1:30 from the Howard Olson home south of Davis and from the Scandia church in Centerville, Rev. Frank A. Berg officiating, funeral services were conducted for Arden Olson, 78, pioneer native South Dakotan. Burial was in the Melhus Lutheran cemetery southeast of Davis.
The passing of Arden Olson, father of Howard Olson, Davis business man, marked the close of a long and interesting story of a native son.

OBITUARY

Arden Olson, son of Holger and Ellen Olson, was born in a one room sod shanty on his fathers homestead in what is now Highland township, Lincoln county, South Dakota, on Jan. 8th, 1872. Here he spent his early boyhood and attended school until 1886 when he went with his parents to Charles Mix county and settled on a homestead near Platte, So. Dak. One of the interesting features of this move was the driving of a large herd of cattle over the prairie to the new homesite. The family lived there for the next 12 years. Here Arden was a deputy sheriff of the county and Indian reservation for a time. From there they moved to Turner county and settled on a farm two miles southeast of Davis. He lived there until his marriage in 1902 to Bertha Erickson, daughter of Mortin and Ingeborg Erickson, also pioneer homesteaders living six miles southeast of Davis. To this union three sons were born, two of them passing away in infancy. Mrs Arden Olson passed away in 1906. Arden and his son Howard have lived in the Davis vicinity except for three years which they spent in Lake Wilson, Minn.. Arden was very active for his age and helped his son in the service station until the past couple of years when his eyes began to fail, resulting in total blindness which confined him to his home, however he was in fairly good health most of the time until last week Tuesday evening when he complained of feeling ill. The doctors examination showed no specific trouble. He passed away quietly in his sleep Wednesday morning, Jan. 4, 1950 at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 27 days. He is survived by his son Howard of Davis, brother Elmer of Flandreau, two sisters, Mrs Sophia Scotvold, Camrose, Alberta, Canada, and Mrs Lena Halsne of Ruthton, Minn., also eight grandchildren and a host of friends.
