Silas was the son of Silas I. and Elizabeth (Parkinson) De Bolt. He served in the Civil War fighting for the Union. He enlisted on September 5, 1861 at the age of 19. He served in Company K, 49 Ohio Infantry. He was discharged as a private. On Jan. 7, 1869 he married Sarah Ellen Lowmaster. The couple had eleven children: Leota Belle; Lillian May; Myrtle; Dudley A.; Joyce; Scott Silas; Edith; Adolph Ray; Donald Brandt; George D; and Dodge G.
