French Man Brown was the child of William Hanson Brown and Lucinda Frances Williams Brown. His father died when French was a toddler and his mother remarried to Charles Ellis Coger on Aug. 30, 1883.

French married May Virginia Rexroad on October 8, 1905 in Braxton County, West Virginia. She was the mother of all his children. They lost two children in infancy and four children lived to adulthood; three boys, Flavil, Ezra and Hobert, and a daughter Retta. All are now deceased.

The Brown Family lived in various places locally, and they were members of the Green Hill Methodist Church. May died in 1939. Their neighbor, William Arthur Brohard died in 1940. On 06 January 1942 French married William's widow, Rosa Showalter Brohard. They had been married over 30 years at the time of French's death in 1973. At some point the two agreed that each would be buried in the Green Hill Cemetery with their first spouse. And so it was done.

Although the Green Hill Church no longer has a pastor or Sunday services, the cemetery is active and lovingly kept, as is the grave of French Man Brown.
