Ursula Johanna Beilage Cathey Lanning, 105 of Belle Fourche died Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the Belle Fourche Health Care Center.

Her parents migrated from Germany in 1906. She was born October 21, 1906 in Hebron, North Dakota to Joseph and Johanna Beilage. Ursula was the eldest child of her 4 siblings. Her father, Joseph ran several businesses including a movie theatre, restaurant, pool hall and worked at the Homestake Mine in Lead and owned a coal mine in Coalwood, MT. The family eventually homesteaded in the Alzada Ridge Montana area.

In her late teens she married sheep rancher and under sheriff, Gerald Cathey. To this union ten children were born.

In January 1949 she married Edward Lanning of Ridge, Montana. To this union two children, Sherry and Danny were born. Together they purchased the Lanning Family Homestead near Belle Creek, Montana, which consited of land belonging to both Edward's father and his uncle. The winters were harsh and school was far away, so they sold the ranch and moved to her ranch where she felt at home, as she had been there nearly all her life. Together Ed and Ursula lived and worked on the ranch until 1991, when it became necessary to move to Belle Fourche to be closer to medical care. Both of Ursula's sons, Danny and Jerry continued their ranching legacies in Montana. Edward passed away in January 2002 and Ursula remained at home until entering the Belle Fourche Health Care Center.

She loved sewing, music and enjoyed gardening, painting, taking pictures, collecting rocks, fishing and was quite a story teller/reminiscer. She enjoyed telling historical stories of horse thieves and rustlers. She remembered big events such as the bank robbery in Belle Fourche and the great depression when the government forced them to destroy livestock.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her daughters, Orah Jean Hough of Broadus, MT, and Rita Wise of Palo Pinto, TX; sons, Allen Cathey of Belgrade, MT and Kenneth Cathey of Manhatton, MT; twins, Bonnie Burley of Broadus, MT and Jerry Cathey of Hammond, MT; son, Gary Cathey of Billings, MT; daughter, Sherry Zimmerschied of Belle Fourche and son, Danny Lanning of Alzada, MT. If everyone was accounted for in this family, it would be quite large, topping 100 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She will be missed by many, especially granddaughter, Leah as they kept in close contact and had a special and unique relationship.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Johanna; son, Alvin Cathey and daughters, Evelyn "Tudy" Vert and Shirley Slayton.

Funeral services were held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Alzada Community Hall in Alzada, Montana with the Reverend Eugene Cadwell officiating.

Burial followed at the Ridge Cemetery in Ridge, Montana.

The family requests memorials to the Alzada Montana Fire Department.
