John Junkin was the eldest of four children born to Mary Davison and Benjamin Junkin of East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, PA. John was 12 when his father died, at which time he was probably living with his father in the tavern which he owned and ran. John and siblings census'd with their mother in 1810, and then John census'd in 1820, on his own, with his first wife, Maria Adams, and with his siblings in the household as well.
John inherited from the sale of his father’s 200+ acres of farm land in (what is now) New Kingstown, PA, and moved his family to Perry County in 1823, to a beautiful and bountiful farm in the hamlet of Alinda. John served as Associate Judge in Perry County for nineteen years, from 1832 to 1852, which probably means he was a well-educated man for his time and most likely educated in the law. We know that his father had provided funds for his education in his will, although we do not know when, where or with whom John studied.
John and Maria had eight children (from 1817 to 1833) before she died in 1835. In 1836, John remarried to Susanna Guss (1816 Cumberland Co – 1898 Muscatine, Iowa) and had eight more children. Most of them have been linked to this memorial.
In 1853, John moved his family to Muscatine County, Iowa, where he farmed until his death in 1865.
