Elmo M. Hargrave, 79, distinguished judge (retired) of the Kansas City Municipal Court, passed away Monday, May 12, 1997, at St. Luke's Hospital. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Mount Moriah and Freeman Chapel; burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Friends may call from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Judge Hargrave was born October 18, 1917, in Mountain Home, AR.
He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Boston, MA.
He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army during WWII serving as a tank commander. He returned from the war highly decorated, receiving the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was wounded at Manila.
Judge Hargrave served variously as an assistant city attorney, Police Department attorney, acting liquor control director and beginning in 1968, municipal judge, including two terms as presiding judge. He was active in the Manual High School Alumni Assoc. and the Retired Officer's Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn S. Hargrave, in 1996.
[Note: son of Elbridge and Mary (Meyers) Hargrave. His parents married 11/11/1916 and divorced 5/19/1926 in Arkansas. By 1930 he and his father were living in Kansas City with his grandparents. ]
