A mighty man of God, a splendid citizen, a true and affectionate husband, father, friend, and an intensely devout and zealous Christian character died at his home in Soldier August 1, 1897, and was interred in the home cemetery in the shadow of the old home and in the midst of a people he loved so well.

Richard J. Tolin was born in Kentucky August 15, 1824. Was married to Rebecca Marks January 22, 1846. He came to Kansas, locating in Jackson County, June 18, 1863. He was the father of seven children, of whom four boys and the daughter are among our best citizens. John Tolin, the other son, lives in Indiana.

The deceased was a life long working Methodist, prosperity or adversity, he was always found at his post of duty in the church and in society doing loyal service for the Master and for the upbuilting of His kingdom here upon earth. He was made class leader of the Methodist church in 1863, in which official capacity he served with great zeal and earnestness continuously up to the time of his demise. To Father Tolin is due great praise for his work for good in community. He has gone from our midst but his good works will live after him to bless society and to keep us in remembrance of his blameless Christian character.
