Advocate of women's rights and social reformer. At the age of 14 she entered the University of Iowa at Iowa City and graduated 6 years later. There she met John A. Pickler, a young soldier who was completing his college courses after the Civil War. They married Nov. 16, 1870 in North Liberty, Iowa. He was elected four times to the U. S. House of Representatives from South Dakota. The Picklers built a large residence in Faulkton, South Dakota, which became the center of social life for the whole community. Alice was very involved in civic affairs, the reform, temperance and women's suffrage movements. Susan B. Anthony was one of her acquaintances in the suffrage movement. She was vice president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in South Dakota, vice president of the Universal Franchise League and a president of the Women's Relief Corps of South Dakota.
