NAUGATUCK — Military funeral services for Bernard C. "Bemie" Ardry Sr., 74, of 139 Gorman Street, were held Saturday, June 21, at 9:30 a.m. from the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home to St Francis Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial, with full military honors, was in St. James Cemetery.

Mr. Ardry, husband of Doris (Gladding) Ardry, died Wednesday morning, June 18, at his home after a brief illness. He was born October 27, 1922, in Drifting.Pa., son of the late Harry and Cora (Eisenhower) Ardry. He attended South Williamsport High School in Pennsylvania and came to Naugatuck in 1941, going to work at Uniroyal Inc. He was inducted into the service on December 16, 1942, and served in the battles of Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe with Company H., 287th Engineer Combat; his U.S. Army grade was sergeant. His decorations and citations included the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Victory Medal, the European African Medal, and the Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. After the war, he returned to work for Uniroyal until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1946 and the American Legion Post 17. Mr. Ardry joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1960, served as commander in 1966-67, and was appointed as a VFW national aide de-camp in 1967.

He served as hospital chairman, trustee and held other chairmanships. Mr. Ardry was appointed deputy chief of staff in 1967 and assistant inspector for the VFW of the United States in 1968 as a member of the Department Inspection Team. He was elected "Vet of the Year" in 1988 by the membership. He was a member of the Nutmeg Square and Round Dance Club of Watertown, and the Past Commanders Club of Post 1946. He was a communicant of St. Francis Church.

Besides his wife of the last 50 years, he leaves a son, Bernard C. Ardy Jr. of Bridgeport; three daughters, Joyce Luzio and Diane Dutton of Naugatuck, and Carol Wyman of Pittsfield, Maine; a brother, Clair Ardry of Altoona, Pa.; five sisters, Edna Sargent of Beacon Falls, Mary Giordano, Viola Bashnick and Lulu Mahl, all of Williamsport, Pa., and Laura Aderhold of Jackson, Mich.; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter. Kathryn Kauffman.
