My maternal grandmother, Blanche Haynes McDonough, studied piano as a child with Mrs. E. G. Cary. Later, she studied piano and organ with Quincy Cole, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Church Hill, where Professor Cole was employed.
She taught piano and played the organ at church where she was a member - Broadus Memorial Baptist Church which was located, then, at 32nd and Broad Streets.
"Big Mama" taught most of her eleven children to play the piano.
