Son of Josiah Stedman, Sr. (1740-xx) and Hannah {Curtis} Stedman of Weston, Massachusetts colony [their burial locations are still undiscovered]. Josiah Sr. was a Revolutionary War veteran. Along with his brothers, Abijah, Joseph and Ebenezer Stedman, all of Weston, Josiah Sr. served in Captain Samuel Lamson's company of Militia which marched to the Alarm in April 1777. The four men were sons of Joseph Stedman (1710 - 1776) and Mary {Cory} Stedman, his wife, of Brookline, Massachusetts colony and later Weston, Massachusetts colony.

Josiah Stedman (II) married firstly in 1804 to Deborah 'Debby'Bates (1782 - 5 Nov 1805, Boston, MA), daughter of Deacon Daniel Bates and his first wife Mildred {Tufts} Bates of Boston. Josiah and Debby had one daughter, Hannah M. Stedman, (b.1805, Boston, d.1815, Boston).

On 7 September1806 in Boston, Massachusetts, widower Josiah married secondly to Miriam White Baxter (1788, Quincy, MA - 1862, Boston, MA), daughter of Lt. Daniel Baxter and Sarah {White} Baxter of Boston.

Josiah was a wealthy merchant, trading in West India goods out of Boston, in partnership with his brother William Marshall Stedman, doing business as 'Josiah and William M. Stedman Co'.

Josiah outlived his second wife, Miriam. He signed his Will on 2 January 1865 and it was Probated on 1 February 1865. He named / bequeathed to his children and grand-children, and appointed his sons Daniel B. Stedman and George Stedman as Executors.

In 1865 widower Josiah lived in Boston with his son Josiah Jr and daughter Lucy, and three servants. At the time of his death in 1867, Josiah was a widower residing in the family home at 83 Harrison Avenue, Boston. He died of pneumonia and old age, in his 86th year.
