BLYTHE, Calif. - Edward John Illig, age 80 of Cheboygan left this world peacefully to enter into the world of his Heavenly Father on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, while visiting his daughter and son-in-law in Blythe, Calif.

He was born Oct. 14, 1924 in West Branch, Mich., to Joseph and Cristina (Green) Illig. On Sept. 28, 1946 at St. Charles Catholic Church, Ed married the former Cleo M. McDonald, who survives.

Ed worked as the area representative for the Detroit Free Press for more than 25 years. He also owned three gas stations, the Illig Oil Company, served as an agent for the Detroit Times, Free Press and News and also helped Cleo in their restaurant. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a member of St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church, the Kiwanis Club and was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 791.

Ed was a loving husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle and friend to many. All who knew him will miss his laughter and great sense of humor. He had a gift for taking care of his family and friends in need.

Besides his wife, Cleo, of Cheboygan, he is survived by five children, Paul (Heidi) Illig of Ishpeming, Mich., Sharon (Raymond) Sanchez of Blythe, Calif., Mary Jo (Brent) Vanier of Cheboygan, Joseph (Kathy) Illig of Gladstone, Mich., and John Illig of Escanaba, Mich.; three brothers; Adolph (Dorothy) Illig of Carver, Minn., James (Geraldine) Illig of West Branch and Ambrose (Marie) Illig of Byron Center, Mich.; four sisters; Georgina (Don) Brick of Auburn, Mich., Irene (Richard) Funch of Cheboygan, Helen Pratt of Reed City, Mich., and Genevieve Kolberg of West Branch; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Ronald (Jeri) McDonald of Saginaw, MIch., Sandy (Richard) Bebble of Gaylord and Jean (Al) Simoneau of Cheboygan; six grandchildren, Victoria, Joseph and Ashley Illig of Ishpeming, Jodi (Bill) Harju of St. Ignace, Danielle (Tim) Hall of Lowell, Mich., and Tom (Ronda) Ulatowski of Traverse City; and six great-grandchildren, Brian and Devin Harju of St. Ignace, Ethan and Emma Hall of Lowell and Molly and Max Ulatowski of Traverse City.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Alfred, Lloyd and Leo; and a great-grandson, Matthew Thomas Ulatowski.

Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 at the Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan, with a Rosary being prayed at 7 p.m. Tuesday under the auspices of the Cheboygan Knights of Columbus, Council No. 791. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan, where the funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m., with The Rev. Donald Brick serving as celebrant. Cremation will follow the Mass and interment of the ashes at Mt. Calvary Cemetery will be in the spring.
