*Enlisted as a Private on August 13, 1862 at the age of 19. Enlisted in Company K, 18th Infantry Regiment Michigan on August 26, 1862. Promoted to Full Sergeant Major on December 18, 1862. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on September 28, 1863. Discharged for promotion Company K, 18th Infantry Regiment Michigan on April 30, 1864. Promoted to Full Captain on April 30, 1864. Commissioned in 12th Cavalry Regiment Tennessee. Discharged from 12th Cavalry Regiment Tennessee on October 7, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Son of Andrew and Isabell Morris Spalding. Married Julia A. LaFountain on December 23, 1868. Worked as county clerk for one year. (GSMC)

**James entered the Civil War as a private in the 18th Infantry, and at the close of the war, was mustered out of service as Major of the 12th Tennessee Calvary. He was the brother of General George W. Spalding and served with him in the Civil War. In 1872 he was elected Monroe County Clerk and served one term. James married Julia A. LaFountain on December 23,1868, in Monroe, Michigan. His widow Julia, daughter of Louis LaFontaine, later married Charles Ross.

James W. Spalding died September 24, 1877, of consumption and was laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery, Monroe, Mi.
