Thursday, October 27, 1927
William Vetter of Grano died at 6 o'clock last Thursday morning, October 20, after a week's illness. Funeral services were held at Carpio, Sunday afternoon and he was buried in the Carpio Cemetery, Rev. F. F. Hubbell of Lansford officiating.
The Donnybrook Post of the American Legion attended and fired the Military Salute at the grave of Mr. Vetter who was a veteran of the U.S. Army, H.M. Talbot, a Civil War veteran acted as a honorary pallbearer.
Mr. Vetter was born in Prussia, Germany, January 18, 1848. He came to America when 17 years old and located in Iowa. Enlisted in the army in 1870 and was honorably discharged in 1875. As a soldier he was through North Dakota when it was only a territory and took part in Indian campaigns. His was the company acting as guard to the first steamboat to navigate the Yellowstone River to its head-waters.
In 1876 he married Adeline Muller and five children were born to them. His first wife died in 1891, and in 1892 he married Bertha Meier. This union was blessed with seven children, only one of whom great to manhood.
Deceased leaves to mourn his death, his wife, at Grano, and the following children: F.W. Vetter, Ormsby, Minn: H.A. Vetter, Carmichael, Sask; Mrs. W.J. Scheel, Davenport, IA; F.A. Vetter, Aberdeen, Wash; Mrs. Claud Wedge, St. James, Minn; and R.E. Vetter, Grano, ND.
Mr. Vetter came to Donnybrook in 1905 and homesteaded in Plain Township. During the past five years he and Mrs. Vetter have lived in Grano where their son, Robert, runs a garage.
