Dr. Andrew J. Karson, 75, of Medina, died Friday, April 17, 1992 at Evergreen Health Care Center, Medina. He was born in Cleveland and was a Medina County resident for 43 years. Dr. Karson graduated from John Adams High School, Cleveland, in 1934, where he was captain of the track team, competing against Jesse Owens and also played basketball. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1938 and the Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1942. He interned at St. Luke's Hospital and served his residency in surgery at Aultman's Hospital for 3 years, and studied as a post graduate at the University of Pennsylvania for 1 year. Dr. Karson served as a Captain in the Medical Corp. U.S.A.F. Chief of Surgery, Regional Hospital Buckley Field, Denver, Colo. From 1949 through 1989 he was Coroner of Medina County, with a long-time association with Sam Gerber, Cuyahoga County Coroner. During those years he had a general practice/surgery practice in Medina. During this time he served as Medical Director of the Medina County Home, Medina County Jail Physician and Team Physician for Medina High School. His memberships included: American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association; Medina County Medical Society; American Society of Abdominal Surgeons; past president, Ohio State Coroner's Association: O.S.M.A. committee on medical care in prisons and jails; former Chief of Surgery and former Chief of Staff, Medina General Hospital; Fellow, American College of Surgeons; Deputy Sheriff, Medina County Sheriff's Mounted Unit and Medina Noon Kiwanis. He is survived by his wife, . . . ; sons . . . [three]; other children, . . . [four]; sister . . . ; brothers . . . , and Tom Kuzmenko of New York, N.Y.; and 7 grandchildren. Dr. Karson was preceded in death by his parents; Avram Kuzmenko in 1970 and Stella Kuzmenko in 1981. Memorial Service 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 1992, at Medina General Hospital, 1000 E. Washington St., Medina. There are no visiting hours. Wait & Son Memorial Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina is in charge of arrangements.
