F. William "Bill" Broome, of Dahlonega, Georgia, died March 19, 2013.
Born in Covington, Georgia, on April 9, 1920, Mr. Broome was the second child of six, son of the late Floyd Lee Broome and Annie Mae Long Broome.
Bill had many and varied endeavors, and was accomplished in them all. He was most proud of his last occupation as a poet and writer, having published his memoirs in 1999, A Will of My Own. He subsequently produced and published four works of free verse poetry. He moved to Dahlonega, Georgia in that same year, with his beloved Trulie, who was the constant and faithful wind beneath his wings.
Mr. Broome began a new career in 1972 entering the commercial real estate field, and in 1975 he opened his own brokerage office on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, William Broome Associates, Inc. He served in this industry for twenty-five years during Atlanta's most active growth period in real estate. He achieved membership in the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, the pinnacle group of the time for commercial real estate in Atlanta. He served twenty-seven years as a Chamber of Commerce executive in several Southeastern cities. His last assignment in this capacity was in Charleston, South Carolina, having served the Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce from 1965 to 1972. Prior to that, he was an executive leading several Georgia Chambers in Decatur, Albany and Cedartown, as well as in Tampa, Florida.
Mr. Broome lived in metro Atlanta from the age of five. After graduation from high school in 1938, his classes at Georgia State College were interrupted with military enlistment in 1941. World War II service in the Army and Air Corps totaled five years, ending in December of 1945, when his business career began.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Etrulia Abernathy "Trulie" Broome, who died in 2005, and who was formerly of LaGrange, Georgia. He was also preceded in death by brother Jack Monroe Broome, sister Nellie Mae Broome Garner, sister Pearl Elizabeth "Betty" Broome Wingo, and brother Jerry Wayne Broome. Mr. Broome is survived by brother James Don Broome of Cumming, GA; brother-in-law Joe Tarver Abernathy of Albany, GA; daughter Carolyn Broome Wannamaker of Westminster, SC; son and daughter-in-law Robert W. and Mary M. Broome of Dahlonega, GA; daughter Nancy Broome Edmunds of Winder, GA; grandchildren Cyndie Lee and husband, Chris Broome and wife, Shawn Edmunds, Steven Edmunds and wife, Scott Edmunds and wife, and Jamie Edmunds; six great-grandchildren, with the seventh due in May, 2013. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He loved his family and life with great passion.
