East Wenatchee

On January 27, 2005, Alan Lee McCune passed away at this home in East Wenatchee. He was 65 years old. Alan was born in Leavenworth, Washington on October 10, 1939, to Don and Carroll McCune. He received the majority of his education in Cashmere and graduated from Cashmere High School in 1957. He lived briefly, in California after graduating, but eventually returned to the Wenatchee Valley where he remained a lifelong resident. He worked at the Cashmere saw mill, as well as spending time logging and setting chokers in the Cascade Mountains. Alan was preparing to join the military in the early 60’s when his service was deferred due to family reasons.

On April 6, 1962, Alan married Nina Lee Whitman in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They made their home in Cashmere where they raised their family and remained married for 33 years. In 1963, he began his career at the ALCOA plant in Malaga. He initially worked in the potrooms, but moved to the ingot plant where he was promoted to shift supervisor. He remained in this position until he retired in 1993, after 30 years of employment. Those who were close to Alan, knew him as “Big Al”, and in later years it was the grandkids who called Grampy, “the Bear”. He was a talented artist, who had a love for music and could be found sitting at the piano, playing his favorite songs by ear when the mood struck him. But he was known best for his love for being in the wilderness. As an avid outdoorsman, he was most happy when he was hunting, fishing and camping in the wilds of Washington State. He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, and his skills as a marksman were recognized by all who knew him. He navigated the back roads and mountain ranges of the Wenatchee Valley like a true mountain man, and fished every river and lake there was from Curlew to the Columbia. We will always cherish the adventure he had in his heart and the great humor he shared with us all.

He is survived by his mother, Carrol Stokes of Cashmere; sons and daughters, Brent McCune and wife Melanie of Tillamook, OR, Aimee Stewart and husband Larry of Cashmere, Judy Paine of Sherwood, OR, Robin Engler and husband Stan of Newcastle, WA, Vickie Bunzey and husband Bob of Charlotte, NC, Vance and wife Tammy Frost of Moses Lake; sister, Julie McCunn and husband Bill of East Wenatchee; half sister, Grace McCune of Woodinville; brother, Brian Stokes of Wenatchee; half brothers, Zane McCune and Clint McCune of Seattle; grandchildren, Kyle and Jerek Laursen, Kristin and Jessie Engler, Caitlin and Elise Bunzey, Olivia Gibson; nieces, Kim Ruddy and Staci Wertenberger. He was preceded in death by father, Don McCune; stepfather, John Stokes; half brother, Craig McCune; uncle, Leo McCune and aunt, Ruby McCune.

There were many friends who were dear to Alan, especially Fred Pipkin, who Alan often referred to as “Pa”. The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the friendship and support they have given over the years.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Braun’s Funeral Chapel in Cashmere. Braun Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
