Opal (Griggs) Srote-Austin, 87, passed away in her home in Tucumcari, New Mexico, on Monday, June 7, 1999, following an extended illness. Opal was born on March 15, 1912, to Jessie Beatrice and Foley Griggs, at the ranch home Puerto Canyon, New Mexico.

She attended Puerto and Plain Schools, and graduated from Forrest High School She attended Highland University at Las Vegas in 1930 and taught at Norton School for one year.

Opal married Robert Eugene Srote in 1933. They were both civilian employees at Clovis Air Force Base during World War II. After her husband's death in 1945, she returned to Tucumcari, NM.

She worked for 29 years at the First National Bank, where she was a bookkeeper.

As a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School, and served as church Treasurer for many years, and active in all other church affairs.

In 1976, Opal married Cecil Anderson Austin and lived in Lubbock, TX; until his death in 1991.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Mary Jean Srote, in 1934; both of her husbands, Robert Eugene Srote and Cecil Anderson Austin; one sister, Georgia Frances Owen; and four brothers: Clarence Gilmere Griggs and Herbert Herman Griggs, and two during World War II, Earl Virginia Griggs and Gene McGee Griggs.

Opal is survived by her four daughters: Bobbie Dicinson (husband, JT) of Clovis, NM; Connie Merle Srote of New Braunfels, TX; Nancy Ayler (husband, Floyd) of Tucumcari, NM; and Linda Srote of Albuquerque, NM; four sisters, Floy Lentfer of Homedale, ID; Emma Daniel of Taft, CA; Lois Wise of Bakersfield, CA; and Dorothy Elizabeth Gill of Tucumcari, NM; and one brother, Roy Raymond Griggs of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
