Jean was born in San Francisco to Julian McPhee and Alma Doyle McPhee in March 1924, the third of six girls. She grew up on the campus of Cal Poly, where her father was the founder and first president.
Jean met her future husband, Kenneth, in ninth grade - they were married in October 1945. She completed her training as a registered nurse and moved to Carrisa Plains, where she and Kenneth spent over 50 years working a family wheat ranch founded by her father-in-law, Nels Beck.

In 2000, she and Kenneth moved to San Luis Obispo, where she lived until she relocated to San Diego to reside with her daughter, Brenda in 2010.
