Maria Lange Meyer passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013 in Gazebo Terrace Convalescent Center.

Maria Ann Margosiak was born May 28, 1927 in the mountain village of Bielanka, Poland. She graduated from private school there.

Her carefree days of youth came to a halt in 1939, as war erupted throughout Europe. Her father was killed. In 1940 on her way to the post office, she was detained by the German soldiers and transported to Germany. Maria was placed in the home of a German Army officer. From 1940 until 1945, she worked as a housekeeper and raised four children.

Allied forces came and Maria was placed in a dispersal camp. There in April 1945, she met a U.S. Army Tech Sergeant Henry Paul Lange from Gay Hill, Texas. They were married October 1, 1945 in Bonn, Germany. One week later, Henry received orders to return home. After much agonizing and upon Maria's insistence, he returned home.

They began their fight to reunite in America. Finally in May of 1946, Maria left Frankfort, Germany en route to America, traveling through Belgium, France and boarding a ship to New York. After wiring Henry that she arrived in New York, she boarded a train to Texas. On May 31, 1946, their prayers were answered and they were reunited.

Their next goal was Maria's citizenship. In 1961 after much effort, she became an American citizen.

In rural Gay Hill, Maria used many skills she learned as a child. She grew fruits and vegetables and preserved them. The family farm raised corn, cotton, cattle and poultry. Her beloved Henry passed away March of 1971. On July 31, 1982, Maria married Walter Frank Meyer. He also preceded her in death January 2, 2000.

Maria was employed by Brenham State School, Brenham Cotton Mill, Blue Bell Creameries, and retired from Germania Insurance. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and American Legion Auxiliary.

She was caregiver to her grandchildren and loved them very much. They especially enjoyed time fishing, playing dominos, eating her Apple Blossom Cake, and Golabki (cabbage rolls).

Maria was preceded in death by parents, mother Karolina (Kataniak) Margosiak, and father, Wincenty Margosiak, husbands, son David Lange in 1964, daughter Tina Gaskamp in 2011, and two sisters.

Surviving loving family includes: sons and daughter-in-laws, Tommy and Sheree Lange, Kenneth and Patricia Lange; son-in-law, Randy Gaskamp; grandchildren, Amber and Blake Dooley, Chelsey Lange, Robin and Jeff Wagner, Sara and Chuck Nagel, Teresa Lange, Rheagan and Chase Mulder, Gavin and Kristin Gaskamp; great-grandchildren, Aiden Lange, Summer Dooley and an expected great-granddaughter; sister Franciszka Pawluczuk; sister-in-law, Hildagard Lange; and numerous nieces and nephews in Chicago and Poland.
