Seth was the second of two children born to Seth and Olive (Emerson) Emerson; his parents were first cousins. He had a older brother named Elera.
When Seth about three his mother died of "dropsy of the brain." and within three months his father remarried to Ida Butler of Topsham. Seth had two sisters and a brother by his father's second marriage: Zuella, Myrtle, and Orange Bernard.
It is not known why or exactly when Seth relocated to Texas. He was last found in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1904 boarding at the same residence as two of his siblings; he was listed as a farmer, whereas his siblings were students. He was first found in Houston in 1911 working as a mechanic for the same firm he later listed in his WWI draft card. According to census records, Seth owned his own home free and clear, living first in Magnolia Park, and later in Houston. He had a 4th-grade education, and later made his living as a longshoreman. He was tall with a slim build, with dark hair and blue eyes.
According to the 1940 census, Seth was first married at the age of 20, or about 1905; the name of this wife is unknown. His second wife was Goldie Chancey, who died in 1923. Prior to the 1930 census Seth remarried to "Annie," whose maiden name was Mary Ann Lewter. They were still married when Seth died in 1945, and she did not remarry after his death.
Seth died from a "cerebrovascular accident," which is a term for "stroke."
