RICHARD W. MARVIN SR., 76 of 108 Clinton St., Sayre died July 3, 1994. Born May 27, 1918 in Covington, he was the son of Edward E. and Celia Blanchard Marvin Phillips. He graduated from Covington High School in June 1936. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mansfield State Teachers College in June 1940 and received a master's degree in school administration from Bucknell University in 1950. He completed additional doctoral credits at Penn State University. He served for 18 months with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a high school math and science te3acher in the Ulster and Athens High Schools for 16 years before being appointed supervising principal for Athens Area Schools. This position was changed to superintendent of schools in 1966. He served for a total of 20 years as the administrator of the Athens School System. During his teaching career Mr. Marvin also coached the boys' soccer, baseball and basketball teams. Mr. Marvin played semi-pro baseball and basketball in Tioga County, Pa and played two years of professional baseball with the St. Louis Browns and Chicago Cubs organizations. He was a member of the Tioga County Sports Hall of Fame and the Athens High School Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Marvin was a life member of the National Education Association and twice served as a Pennsylvania delegate to the National Education Association convention. He was a member of the Bradford County Education Association and the Athens Teachers Association and served as president of both organizations. He was a member and past president of the Sayre Sportsman Club and a member of the Sayre-Athens Lions Club, Athens Rotary and Blossburg Masonic Lodge No. 350. At the time of his death Mr. Marvin was serving as an Athens Township supervisor and chairman of the Athens Township Sewer Authority. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Miriam E. Marvin; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Jr. and Lois of Spencerport, N.Y. and Charles and Diane of Sayre; grandchildren, Christopher and Jeffrey of Sayre, and Jennifer, Richard and Megan of Spencerport; a brother, Edward of Morris, Pa. and three nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Tina Marvin Achilles. At Mr. Marvin's request there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers he requested that donations be made to the Athens High School Baseball Fund. Checks should be made payable to the Richard Marvin Baseball Memorial, c/o Athens High School, Athens, Pa. or Athens Township Round Top Development, c/o Athens Township, Herrick Avenue, Sayre, Pa. or a charity of one's choice. A memorial service will be held at the Athens United Methodist Church, Athens on Aug. 27, 1994 at 1 p.m. with the pastor, the Rev. Howard Hockenbury officiating.
