Daughter of Abel and Eunice (Harlow) Haskell, Mehitable first married Jacob Sullivan Lord, Sr. at Gloucester, Massachusetts on 31 Dec 1835. They were the parents of five children: Jacob S. Jr.; Clara M. A.; Richard Mason, Merrill Herbert, and James Mason Lord. Her sons Richard and Merrill both died at Danvers, Massachusetts of scarlet fever in March 1852. Her husband died of consumption at Gloucester in late May of 1860, just prior to that year's census. Mehitable, with her son James and daughter Clara, moved to the Pacific Northwest in the spring of 1866; and on 28 Aug 1868 at Portland, Oregon she became the second wife of Rev. Alfred R. Elder. She was enumerated with Alfred on the 1870 census at Olympia, Washington with her children James and Clara, and Alfred's youngest child, Alfred R. Elder, Jr. After Alfred's death in 1882, she and Clara moved to Tacoma with Clara's husband, Andrew J. Littlejohn. Her son James was institutionalized at Western State Hospital at Fort Steilacoom.

Mehitable was predeceased by her daughter, but remained in the household of her son-in-law Andrew Littlejohn until her own death. She was survived by her sons James and Jacob.
