Sherwood was the son of James T and Mary Davis. In 1910, the family lived in Pct 7, Panola County, Texas Children living in the home were: May (18), Hugh (16), Susie (14), Sherwood (12), and Bernice (8). Also in the home was Maggie Dearing (22), a daughter who was married to James E Dearing (27), also in the home.

He attended Lon Morris College, Southwestern University and Vanderbilt Divinity School

Sherwood enlisted in the United States Army May 27, 1917 and served on the Western Front in France during World War I with the Hospital Corps. He was honorably discharged April 1919.

In 1922, he married May Olivia Wiemers in 1922. They were the parents of two daughters.

With the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the US Army once again as a Chaplin in Africa. He was medically discharged in 1944.
