John Thomas enlisted as a Private in Company C of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years service. He was discharged for disability at Washington, D.C. on April 20, 1862. James then enlisted in Company G of the Eighth New York Heavy Artillery on July 23, 1862. He was discharged for promotion and commissioned Second Lieutenant in Company D of the Twentieth United States Colored Infantry on December 9, 1863. James was then discharged and re-enlisted as Sergeant in Company E of the 147th Illinois Infantry on February 6, 1865. He mustered out of service on January 20, 1866, at Savannah, Georgia.

John J. Thomas, age 78 years, died at the home of his son, A. J. Thomas, 1616 east Seventh street, yesterday morning. Mr. Thomas came to this city eight years ago and since then made his home with his son. He was a charter member of the G. A. R. of Council Grove, Kas., and a member of the I. O. O. F. and the Christian church of that city. He fought in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil war. He leaves his wife and one son, Andrew J. Thomas, of the family residence.
