Heiress, Philanthropist. Adelaide was president emeritus of the Marjorie Merriweather Post Foundation, which operates the Hillwood Museum and Gardens in Washington. Mrs. Riggs became president of the foundation after the 1973 death of her mother, Marjorie Merriweather Post, heir to the Post cereal fortune. The Hillwood Museum and Gardens occupy the site of Mrs. Post's former residence in Washington. She was born in Greenwich, Conn., and grew up in Connecticut and Long Island. She moved to Maryland after her marriage to Thomas Wells "Tim" Durant. That marriage ended in divorce, as did her marriage to Merrall MacNeille, a former Maryland racing steward. Her third husband, Augustus Riggs IV, a Maryland horse breeder, He died in 1975. For much of her life, Mrs. Riggs was known for breeding and racing horses, and breeding and showing dogs. Among her stakes-winning horses were St. Francis, McCarthy Moore, Westerlands, Woods of Windsor and Wild Zone. She was a dog show judge in the United States, England, Scotland, Canada and Bermuda. She had been a judge in the Best of Show event at the Westminster Kennel Club Show at Madison Square Garden. She specialized in breeding and showing Scottish terriers. She was a gardener and tennis player. Adelaide was buried with her 3rd husband Augustus at Oak Grove Cemetery, Glenwood, Maryland.
