Mary was the daughter of George W. Gardiner and Mary Dugan. She married in North Kingstown on 6 May 1877 Edwin T. Arnold, and the couple had twin sons two years later. They were divorced in 1881, and Mary never remarried. Edwin supposedly raised the twins, and was remarried in 1885; however, Mary did maintain contact with her sons and was well remembered by her descendants.
