Dr. Paul Allyn Dies; Well Known Physician

Waverly - Dr. Paul Richard Allyn, practicing physician at Waverly since 1904, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Memorial hospital t Springfield. His death at the age of 72 occurred after an illness of seven weeks.
Dr. Allyn was born April 10, 1879, at Modesto, the son of the late Richard Thomas and Eliza Hendrson Allyn. He attended Waverly High School, Eureka College and Barnes Medical College at S. Louis, where he received his M.D. degree in 1903. He interned at the St. Louis city hospital.
He was married in 1908 to Lena Turner at Los Angeles, Calif. In 1908-09 he took post-graduate work in Austria, at the University of Vienna.
During World War I he served in the Army medical corps as a lieutenant and captain, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in the Reserves. He was past cvommander of post 262 of the American Legion at Waverly.
Mayor of Waverly
The decedent served many years on the city council and was mayor of Waverly. He was the city health officer at the time of his death. He was a member of the Christian church.
He belonged to the Morgan County Medical Society, the Illinois State Medical Society, the Mississippi Valley Medical Society and the American Medical Association.
He was a member of Waverly lodge No. 118, A.F. and A.M., the Springfield Consistory, and a charter member of Ansar Temple of the Ancient and Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine. He belonged to the Waverly Knights of Pythias and the Lions Club. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
Famous Puritan Ancestors
The ancestry of the deceased extends back into the colonial period. His ancestors include Matthew Allyn, one of the founders of Hartford, Conn., in 1634; Lt. Joseph Wadsworth, who conceealed the Charter of Connecticut n the Old Charter Oak Tree at Hartford in 1687; and Richard Mather, the famous Puritan preacher.
Dr. Allyn is survived by his wife, Lena; one son, Dr. Richard Allyn of Springfield; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Crain of Modesto and Mrs. Elwood Brown of East St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Walter H. and Dr. Howard O. Allyn, and one sister, Mrs. B. F. Redshaw.
The body was taken to the Wiese Funeral Home and will be removed at 4 p.m. Thursday to the residence in Waverly, where friends may call until noon Friday. Services will be held at the Methodist church in Waverly Friday at 2 p.m., Rev. Bronson Smith officiating.
Burial will be in Waverly cemetery.
