"John F. Rapert Died Saturday Night-
John F. Rapert, 84 year old Doniphan resident, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at a nursing home near Alton where he had been a patient for five weeks. He had been ill for two days.
Born January 17, 1875, in Randolph County, Ark., Mr. Rapert had been a Ripley County resident for 50 years. He married on March 26, 1896, to Balcus Swindle who died December 4, 1939. Mr. Rapert was a member of the Oxly Methodist Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Grace Brawley of Doniphan, a brother Almus Rapert of Middlebrook, and two sisters, Mrs. Effie Johnson of Success, Ark., and Mrs. Birdie Cook of Peach Orchard, Ark.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Edwards chapel with Rev. Bill Odom of Senath conducting. Burial was in Antioch cemetery under the direction of the Edwards Funeral Home."
Alton is in Oregon County, Missouri.
John Francis Rapert told his grandaughters, Mazie, Arvena and Dixie Hambrick that he was "full-blooded" Indian. Mazie recalls him being Cherokee. Even if his mother was Cherokee in order for him to be full-blooded his father would also have to have been Cherokee. The other posibility is that he was adopted from the local Cherokee indians. His grandparents worked with the local native americans and it is stated that the women loved to comb his grandmother's hair, as it was red.
