Sylvia Jean (Stengel) Konstant, daughter of Harry and Luella (Hof) Stengel, was born on February 22, 1930 at home in Melrose Township, rural Milbank. Sylvia attended Melrose #8 grade school and graduated from Milbank High School in 1948. Following graduation she attended Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. Sylvia was united in marriage to Elwood Konstant on June 18, 1950, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Milbank. She worked as a secretary at First National Bank and was an organist at Emanuel Lutheran Church for many years. She was instrumental in starting and nurturing the organist training program at Emanuel and took great pride in the accomplishments of its organ students. Sylvia's interest in clothing and fashion lead to her involvement in the Make It Yourself With Wool program and 4-H fashion review judging. Also, she had several related home-based businesses including Doncaster Fashions, Karla Jordan jewelry, and Beauty For All Seasons cosmetics and color consultation. She was an accomplished seamstress. Sylvia served on the Milbank Community Foundation Board for several years. She was active in her Red Hat group and with the Chautauqua Concert Association.
