Second Lieutenant Wingate was the pilot of U.S. Army Air Corps B-17F
Flying Fortress #42-3458, serving with the 333rd Bomb Group, 468th Bomb Squadron. He was killed when the bomber crashed due to engine failures and fire, twelve miles south of the Dalhart Army Air Base, Texas.
