MRS. JOHN BIRKENSTOCK
Mrs. Elizabeth, widow of Col. John Birkenstock, died at the Allentown Hospital on Tuesday evening, the result of a stroke of apoplexy, received three weeks ago while visiting Mr. and Mrs. John M. Farrell, No. 402 Hamilton street. Mrs. Birkenstock resided in Philadelphia with two sisters and was 78 years of age. Although advanced in years she was in excellent health and extremely active for her years. Her husband, Col. John Birkenstock, was a widely known resident of Allentown during the '90's, having been the proprietor of the Eagle Brewery at Sixth and Union streets, and later assisted in establishing the Horlacher Brewing Co. The family moved to Muncie, Ind. where Col. Birkenstock died twelve years ago after which Mrs. Birkenstock returned to Philadelphia.
Mrs. Birkenstock was born in Philadelphia in the house in which William Penn resided at Delaware avenue and Water street. Some years ago the house was removed to Fairmount Park. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Scholl, who were well known residents of Philadelphia in their days.
While residing in Allentown, Mrs. Birkenstock made many friends and was held in the highest esteem by all whom she met. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Oswald Milke of Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies; Jacob Birkenstock, of Salt Lake City. There are five grandchildren, Oswald, Walter, Gertrude and Mildred Milke of Kingston, Jamaica, and Mrs. Gertrude Miller of Philadelphia, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Birkenstock. Two sisters also survive. They are Mrs. Tillie Baltz and Mrs. Henry Gross, of Philadelphia.
Jacob Birkenstock came on from Philadelphia to have the body taken to that place for burial.
(Allentown Morning Call; Jun. 19, 1919; pg. 14)

Note: Two errors in the obituary, the children of Elizabeth Birkenstock should read, Mrs. Oswald Milke....Jacob Birkenstock, of Philadelphia, and John Birkenstock, of Salt Lake City.
Also, the last name of her sister, Tillie, was Bandtholtz.
