John had been a blacksmith while living in Rochester, Minnesota. He and his wife and two sons, William and Robert, left Rochester and farmed at Kensel, Minnesota for a year and also near Ardoch, North Dakota for a year before moving to Turtle River Township, Grand Forks, North Dalota.

After his wife died, he and his sons stayed in Turtle River Twp. northeast of Manvel in Grand Forks Co, and farmed. John became paralized on march 1, 1919, and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

In Dec , 1921 John's body was shipped from Grand Forks, North Dakota to Rochester, Minn. at a cost of 35.00. (Hearse 13.00, Autos 15.00 and opening grave 7.00) He was buried next to his wife Margaret and daughter Mary Louise and his in laws Robert A. and Ellen (McLaughlin) Montague.
