Ruth Margaret (née White) Mitchell was the second of eight children born to Martha Maria Augusta (née Reuter) White and Melville John White in Sandusky, OH. She completed her sophomore year of high school before beginning work as a nurses aid. She met and married Albert John Michel (later changed to John Albert Mitchell) at the age of 19.

Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was very active in Republican politics, serving as a delegate to the Ohio State Convention. Before it was 'fashionable', Ruth was, in a sense, a single mother due to her husband's job as Captain with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company which kept him away from home eight to nine months out of the year. Ruth loved needlework and some of her designs were displayed in Ohio department stores Lamsons and LaSalle & Koch. She was also adept at real estate, investing in numerous properties throughout her life. Ruth is remembered as an intelligent and loving woman, with tremendous skill in financial matters. The wife of a Captain, she was known for running a 'tight ship', but was a push-over where her five grandchildren were concerned.

Ruth was survived by her daughters and their husbands, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She is deeply missed.
