Dorathea Deane Van Erden
(January 9, 1917 - March 19, 2013)

Dorathea Deane Monahan Van Erden Wiese, "Grandma Sam" , 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 of causes incident to age.

She was born on January 9, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Deane and Fannie Hall Monahan.

She attended schools in Ogden and Salt Lake City before graduating from Great Falls High School in Montana. She attended Weber Jr. College in Ogden, graduating in 1936 with an Associate's degree in English, lettering in Drama. She was a member of Otyokwa Sorority. She also attended Utah State University and UCLA. She served as president of the Ogden High School PTA and later as president of the Weber State Alumni Association.

While attending college, she met the love of her life, Jacob Joseph "Jack" Van Erden. They were married May 31, 1936 at the Ben Lomond Hotel in Ogden. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. Jack passed away in 1984.

She married longtime friend and neighbor Harold Edward Wiese in July 1988. He passed away in 1995.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions over the years, including Relief Society President in the Ogden 17th Ward.

Dorathea's life calling was teaching and mentoring young people. She was a substitute elementary school teacher for five years and a math teacher at South Ogden Jr. High for 17 years. After her retirement, she continued tutoring algebra until age 90. She helped motivate hundreds of "her kids" to love math, changing the course of many lives.

Dorthea was always there for anyone who needed her. While husband Jack was in the Pacific Theater, she wrote a letter to him every day for the three years he was gone. And after raising their own two sons, she and Jack took in three "foster" sons, helping them get through tough times and on a path to lead successful lives.

She was known for her red hair, vibrant personality, and sparkly smile that drew people to her. Not straying far from her Irish roots, she was also known to be stubborn, opinionated and independent.

Dorathea's greatest hobby, besides reading, was people. She made friends easily and would often strike up conversations with strangers. To her, a stranger was a friend she hadn't met yet. Her family was small so she created a larger one by considering friends as family. She was also known for her ability to talk, always filling in moments of silence.

She was cared for and loved by many. "Grandma Sam" will be greatly missed.

Dorathea is survived by son, James D. (Rebecca) Van Erden, Fairfax, VA; former daughter-in-law, Ruth Van Erden, Riverdale, UT; foster sons, Scott (Ana) Fleming, Denver, CO; Rick (Paulette) Smith, Provo, UT; Vinh (Ellen) Ly, Layton, UT; and seven step-children; granddaughters, Jody (Jim) Hull, Jayme Van Erden, and Jennifer Van Erden; children of her foster sons and stepchildren; and two nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by son, Jeffery Allen (age 15); husband, Jack; half-brother, Joseph A. Irvine; and husband, Harold.

Special thanks to the many friends and family members who helped Dorothea these past few years, especially: Pat Romney, Stan Summerill, Ruth Van Erden, Debbie Nations, Lance and Marie Nelson, Larry and Pauline Johnson, Nikki Hansen, and Rick Smith. Thanks also to the staff at Washington Terrace Care and Rehab Center and Inspiration Hospice for their care.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Dorothea to the Weber State University Mathematics Dept. Fund or Moyes College of Education Scholarship Fund, or any youth outreach/educational charity.
